Counselling and Psychotherapy are both talking therapies and though some may see no clear difference between them, during my work I have noticed some differences. I will explain what these are below, however, you do not need to make a decision on whether you need counselling or psychotherapy before starting sessions. My aim is to always work with you at your own pace. The depth of exploration is completely up to you.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy tends to cover broader issues at a deeper level over a longer period of time. Psychotherapy is a talking therapy that recognises the impact of trauma, it acknowledges the experiences that you have had during your life that have impacted on how you deal with the world around you and manage life events. Rather than seeking to diagnose you, the focus will be on understanding these aspects of yourself. We will look to gain a deep appreciation for your emotions, exploring the root causes of your challenges rather than just seeking to manage them in the short term.

The UK Council for Psychotherapists (UKCP) state that a trained Psychotherapist can support you with the following:

  • To express your feelings and process them in a safe and supportive relationship

  • To gain deeper insight into the issues you face

  • To talk about things in a confidential environment that you might not feel be able to discuss with anyone else

  • To find better ways to cope with feelings and fears

  • To change the way you think and behave to improve your mental and emotional well-being

  • To improve relationships in your life, including with yourself

  • To make sense of any clinical diagnoses you have had by understanding what has happened to you

  • To heal from trauma

  • To learn to communicate better and tolerate differences in yourself and others

Psychotherapy

Counselling

Counselling tends to focus on specific presenting issues and in comparison to Psychotherapy is usually shorter term. Counselling can support you through something that you are experiencing right now, a difficult life event, current stresses or challenges faced on a daily basis.

Counselling can help you manage things such as:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Relationship breakdown

  • Bereavement

  • Abortion

  • Work related stress

  • Anger

  • Confidence

Life Coaching

Life Coaching might be for you if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Feeling stuck and unmotivated

  • Unsure how to move forwards in life

  • Lacking a sense of direction

  • You have goals in mind but you're unsure of where to start

  • You've been trying to achieve something but it just isn't working out

I will enthusiastically encourage you to reach your goals in life, to explore barriers to your achievements and consider ways to combat what is standing in your way. It can help to feel that someone is on your side, supporting your efforts and celebrating your wins alongside you.

I offer Life Coaching sessions in blocks of 6 sessions, we will typically meet on a weekly or fortnightly basis to create a time-specific plan and regularly review your progress.

Life Coaching is not therapy. Life Coaching sessions are structured and goal-orientated. Once you have identified an area or areas in your life that you want to work towards, our sessions will focus on practical ways for you to be able to accomplish them. However, if along the way we come across an issue that may require therapy we can discuss this together and decide on the best course of action.

Couples Therapy

I offer trauma-informed Couples Therapy. This means that I work in a way that recognises trauma and the impact that it has on a relationship between two people.

Increasing your awareness of how trauma affects your behaviours within your relationship can lead to a feeling of enhanced trust and a greater sense of empathy. Additionally, learning to develop the skills of emotional regulation and healthy communication can deepen your connection with each other.
